Wicklow County Council in conjunction with SISPAR have published their plans for the redevelopment of Greystones harbour.
These proposals are on a far larger scale than their original remit and involve the building of large apartment blocks and commercial buildings along the North Beach and on an infilled area of the bay.
The development of over 375 residential units as well as commercial properties 4 1/2 stories in height, are completely out of character with both the town of Greystones and the harbour area. These large scale blocks will significantly impact the existing views of the North Beach and Bray Head and place an intolerable strain on the already over extended infrastructure in the harbour area.

The Greystones Protection & Development Association (GPDA) strongly oppose the current development on the grounds that : -
- The development does not have the support of the community
- Is out of character with the town and harbour of Greystones
- Cannot be supported by current infrastructure
- Will lead to the construction of a road across Bray Head
- Will destroy scenic views of the beach and Bray head
The GPDA has sought the opinions of local residents and drawn up its own plans for a smaller scale harbour development that has received the overwhelming approval of the local community.

Through, our written submissions, and through the testimony given over the last few days, we have demonstrated, we believe, that this plan is wrong for Greystones. Quite simply, it doesn’t fit. The minor modifications undertaken in the Additional Information do nothing to render the development more acceptable.
• As a result, despite the removal of two blocks, the development is still enormously intrusive on the landscape.
• It’s design is in such conflict with its surroundings that it was necessary for the Council to withhold the ACA status from the harbour area. To have accorded that status, would have highlighted the unsuitability of the design of the housing, and posed a greater risk that the development would be refused permission.
• Likewise it is obvious that the receiving environment cannot cope with the traffic this development will generate and no amount of tweaking of access junctions, or traffic calming measures, will overcome this problem.
• It is necessary to disturb the old dump and contaminate previously uncontaminated land in order to complete the development
• The coastline is unsuitable for this type of development and it too cannot cope. Hence erosion will be massively accelerated. As a result the council will be committed to a costly beach nourishment program in perpetuity. This will place a massive drain on the resources of the local authority and possibly cause silting problems elsewhere as the nourishment material is washed away each year.
• In these, and in many more ways, we have shown that the Council’s plans are merely an attempt to shoehorn a completely unsuitable development into the lovely bay in Greystones
